Modern Renditions of Feel-Good Food Are Dished Up At Plate

Distill the dining principles down to it's most basic principles, and it's all about what's on the plate. At Plate, David Mantelmacher's new restaurant at Suburban Square in Ardmore, PA, plates will be filled with contemporary American cuisine, served in a warm, stylish setting where everyone is welcome.

Owner of Philadelphia's decade-old Circa, Mantelmacher turned his attentions to just beyond the city limits, where he and Executive Chef Tom Harkins offer a dining destination for singles, couples and families alike. With a wood-fired oven as it's centerpiece, Plate serves dishes like Mom used to make - if Mom had been a classically trained chef with a stone-fired oven!

In the stone-fired oven, chefs prepare baked top neck clams, cedar plank salmon, garlic roasted organic chicken, and wood-fired smoked pork chops. Custom-made pizzas are cooked in the oven at lunchtime. Also on the menu; hearty soups such as roasted tomato served with a mini grilled cheese sandwich. Entree-sized salads include Cobb, Caesar, poached salmon, and Asian chicken. Sandwiches and burgers include an oven-fired vegetable, and a BBQ beef brisket sandwich.

Entrees, which are priced in a range of $18 and below, include such feel-good foods as baked meat loaf, sesame-crusted tuna, beef Bolognese, and porcupine shrimp. Appetizers include deviled eggs, crisp calamari made with a rice crispy crust, cast-iron baked mozzarella with artichokes and crabmeat and smoked duck calzone. Plate also offers a kids menu featuring childhood favorites like macaroni and cheese, chicken fingers and petite filet mignon. Pastry Chef Angela Tustin's dessert menu features such playful items as a selection of three scoops of homemade ice cream in miniature ice cream cones served in an artists palette.

With a horseshoe-shaped bar made by local artisan Bolla Design as it's focal point, Plate's bar area which accommodates more than 50 people and offers an array of creative cocktails and six draft beers, as well as a 42 inch plasma screen television. The wine menu features "20 under 30" (under $30 per bottle that is).

DAS Architects, the award-winning restaurant design firm based in Philadelphia, designed Plate's interior, which features Italian furniture, glass partition walls, mahogany wood, and a rust-colored poured concrete floor. Plate seats 195, with French doors opening to outdoor seating for 60 under a cedar pagoda, and three private dining areas that can accommodate groups of 10 to 100.
